Search bots and training bots are different
Search and answer bots, such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot, read your pages to answer someone's question now, often with a link back to you. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect text for future models.
You can block training crawlers and still welcome the search bots. A blanket “block all bots” rule, which some themes and security plugins add, quietly removes you from AI answers.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a short Markdown file at the root of your site that sums up who you are and links to your most useful pages. It's a community proposal, not a standard, and Google says you don't need AI text files for its AI features. It's quick to add and gives AI tools that look for it a clean summary.
Why structured data still matters
Structured data states facts (what you are, where, when you're open, how to contact you) in a vocabulary machines don't have to guess at. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features, but accurate markup removes guesswork for everything that reads your site.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Type to search these questions, or ask anything about getting found on Google and AI.
Should I block AI bots from my website?
Usually not the search ones: if ChatGPT or Perplexity can't read your site, they'll recommend businesses they can read. To keep your content out of model training, block training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot specifically and keep the search bots allowed.
How do I let AI search bots in?
Edit your robots.txt so the search bots aren't covered by a Disallow rule. Many builders and SEO plugins have a setting for it. CiteMagnet drafts the exact rules for you.
Does this guarantee AI will recommend my business?
No tool can promise that. Being readable is the price of entry; after that, assistants weigh reviews, your details and how well you match the question.
